Episode 11 – Urmila Nimbalkar

As someone who grew up in Southern California, I actually heard a lot of Marathi language spoken in my household, with most of those links back to the language and culture seen through the lens of my parents and grandparents.  So I’ve been thinking about what that lens looks like now, whether these connections are still strong for a different generation of content creators in the media landscape of 2020, and if there is a future development of cultural material that may offer the foundation for a new generation of Marathi speakers.  My next guest, Urmila Nimbalkar , is an Indian actor and content creator who is helping to shape this.  She’s an influencer, and a fashion and image consultant, who is using social media platforms like youtube and instagram to create more architecture with that Marathi media. She has been acting in film and television, but her YouTube channel, which offers her fresh perspective on lifestyle, fashion, and travel, presented completely in Marathi, has about 350 thousand subscribers.  We chatted recently and while it may have been a different conversation if it happened purely in Marathi, it was comforting to know that even in English, this was the common link connecting us from different generations and from opposite sides of the planet.
